The American Red Cross is issuing an urgent call for blood donors of all blood types, especially type O. Help save a life by participating in one of the following American Red Cross blood donation opportunities: 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, USC Sumter Arts & Letters Building, 109 Miller Road; 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, Westminster Presbyterian Church, 230 Alice Drive; 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13, YMCA of Sumter, 510 Miller Road; and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, Shaw Air Force Base BX Exchange Building, 370 Rhodes Ave., Building 1403, Shaw AFB.

A Red, White and Blue Ball, presented by American Legion Post 202 Women's Auxiliary, will be held from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, at 310 Palmetto St. Event will feature DJ Smoove as well as free food. Tickets are $20 each. Semi formal attire. Call Janetta at (803) 406-8038.

Central Carolina Technical College will hold a "Lunch and Learn" noon to 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3, at the main campus, Building M400, Room M401. If you are the parent of a Sumter County high school student or eighth grade student, you are invited to have lunch on CCTC and learn about the college opportunities available to your child. The Fourth Annual Unity Prayer Breakfast, hosted by One Sumter Community, will be held at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church Enrichment Center, 315 W. The Sumter Combat Veterans Group will host a veterans helping veterans seminar 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at the Birnie HOPE Center, 210 S. Purdy St. This event will focus primarily on VA claims. All area veterans are invited and encouraged to attend. If you are having problems with your claims, there will be someone at this meeting with information and answers to your questions.

The Sumter Satellite James R. Clark Memorial Sickle Cell Foundation will host a back-to-school giveaway from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at South Sumter Resource Center, 337 Manning Ave. There will be fun and games, door prizes and lunch.

The Sumter Police Department's Annual Back-to-School Bash will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Crosswell Park, North Lafayette Drive. Event will feature DJ Howie, food, balloon artists, face painting, a water park and more. All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult 18 years of age or older.

The Sumter Combat Veterans Group will hold its annual golf tournament on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Crystal Lakes Golf Course, 1305 Clara Louise Kellogg Drive. There will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Registration fee is $50 per golfer limited to the first 40 teams. Fee includes continental breakfast, lunch, souvenirs, cart, green fees and refreshments during play. Team format will be two person Captain's Choice. There will be first and second place prizes for men's and women's teams, closest to the pin and longest drive. Raffle tickets for a La-Z-Boy recliner will be $2 each or three for $5.
