'State of the Chamber' forum set at Opera House

The Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce will hold its first State of the Chamber forum at 6 p.m. today at the Sumter Opera House, 21 N. Main St., with a reception immediately following at 7 p.m. in the City Centre.

"The purpose of this program is to educate our member businesses and community on what our chamber is up to," said Chamber President and CEO Chris Hardy. "As part of our membership council's body of work, it is important that we keep our members up to date on the organization's mission and what we are doing to accomplish that mission."

He said the better educated the community is on what the chamber of commerce is, what it does and why we are here, the better the organization will be.

"Though we try to communicate the happenings within the chamber daily through electronic communication or social media, we also feel a forum such as this will provide that face-to-face interaction we need with the community," Hardy said. "This is not solely an organization effort to accomplish our mission, it is a community effort."

Hardy said the program will not be a sales-oriented forum where the chamber is trying to attract businesses to join the organization, but will be an educational forum including a question-and-answer session.

"We also encourage those attending to stay for the reception, which will give additional time for questions with our leadership," Hardy said. "The more opportunities we have to tell our story, the better chance we have that the community understands why we do what we do."

There is no charge to attend, and reservations are not required.
