Lorenzo Gutierrez of Sumter died Sunday, Aug. 5, from injuries he sustained in a house fire on July 28 according to a news release from Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker.

The 36-year-old father died at Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia. An autopsy will be performed on Monday in Newberry.

Gutierrez sustained his injuries in a fire at his home on Bowman Drive, in which four of five family members were flown to burn centers after being rescued by Sumter firefighters. The youngest of the victims is 3 years old. The 32-year-old mother was taken to Palmetto Health Tuomey.

According to Battalion Chief Joey Duggan, the family was trapped in the duplex by the fire that started in the living room.

Investigators determined the cause of the fire was not suspicious. Duggan said there was no working smoke detector in the house.

Occupants in the other half of the duplex were not injured.
