Sumter High boys, girls win cross country meets


The Sumter High School varsity boys and girls cross country teams both won their meets on Tuesday at the SHS course.

The Lady Gamecocks won with 33 points followed by West Florence, South Florence and Lake City.

Sumter's Lorien Clark finished first overall with a time of 22 minutes, 37 seconds. McKenzie Zimmerman was fourth (24:37), Emily Jordan was fifth (24:38), Kayla Greene was seventh (26:05) and Anya Bethea was 16th (29:32).

The SHS boys won with 24 points with WF second, SF third and Lake City fourth.

Brandon Poston was first overall in 17:17 to lead the Gamecocks. Brian Gamboa was third (19:26), Theron Bradford fourth (19:46), Sean Goodwin seventh (20:02) and Anthony Gabriel ninth (20:12).

LANCASTER - The Lee Central High School football team suffered its first loss of the season in its Region IV-2A opener, falling to Buford 28-27 on Monday at the Buford field.

The game was originally scheduled to be played on Friday in Bishopville before being moved to Saturday. It couldn't be played either day though due to field conditions at Stallion Stadium and was moved to the BHS field.

Demetrius Dubose rushed for 155 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries to lead the Stallions, who are 4-1 overall. The other touchdown came on a 35-yard pass from Tijuan Durant to Dayrice Austin.

Deontae Lowery had four sacks to lead the LC defense while Corey King had an interception.

Lee Central plays at Chesterfield on Friday.

COLUMBIA - Sumter High School finished third in a 3-team match on Tuesday at Oak Hills Country Club.

Danae Brunson shot a 64 to lead the Lady Gamecocks, who had a score of 270. Taylor Kingsley shot a 39 and Hanna Beben a 41 to lead Camden, which shot 169.

Caroline Gossett shot a 59 for Irmo, which shot 245.

MANNING - Wilson Hall defeated Laurence Manning Academy 3-1 on Tuesday at Bubba Davis Gymnasium.

The Lady Barons won by scores of 25-10, 25-12, 20-25 and 25-12.

Courtney Clark led WH with 16 kills and Becka Noyes added eight. Chandler Curtis had 23 assists while Liza Lowder and Madison Sliwonik each had five aces.

Wilson Hall improves to 10-9 overall and 1-0 in SCISA Region II-3A and will travel to Florence Christian on Thursday.

CONWAY - Sumter High School remained winless in Region VI-5A with a 3-0 loss to Conway on Tuesday at the CHS gymnasium.

Conway won by the scores of 25-18, 25-17, 25-19.

The Lady Gamecocks are 6-6 overall and 0-4 in region play.
