Sumter High School's Kirkhart scores 23 points in 5A swim meet

COLUMBIA - Sumter High School sophomore Hayden Kirkhart swam a personal best while finishing ninth in the 50-meter freestyle in the 5A state swim meet on Saturday at the University of South Carolina Natatorium.

Kirkhart finished in a time of 25.04 seconds. She was 12th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1 minute, 01.37 seconds. She scored 23 points in the meet.

Junior Abby Hoshour placed 22nd in the 50 free with a time of 26.11 seconds. She was 19th in the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:02.05, scoring two points.

The 200 free relay team of Hayden Kirkhart, Abby Hoshour, eighth-grader Samantha Kirkhart and seventh-grader Emily Kate Hoshour finished 14th in a time of 1:46.99. The team dropped 2.33 seconds off its best time, moving up six spots after being seeded 20th. The team scored 14 points.

Sumter finished 22nd overall out of 29 teams that scored points.

Hillcrest 1

Ebenezer Middle School defeated Hillcrest 3-1 on Monday at the EMS gymnasium.

Ebenezer won by the scores of 25-15, 25-14, 18-25, 26-24.

Jordan Hatcher led Hillcrest, which fell to 6-4 on the season, with 14 service points and two aces. Olivia OClair had 13 points and two aces, Mylese Bondurant had seven points and an ace, Maranda Bird had five points, four aces and three kills and Tyra Wilkinson had four kills.

Tway wins Safeway Open

NAPA, Calif. - Kevin Tway made a 10-foot birdie putt on the third hole of a playoff Sunday to win the season-opening Safeway Open for his first PGA Tour title.

The son of eight-time PGA Tour winner Bob Tway, the 30-year-old former Oklahoma State player beat Ryan Moore on the par-4 10th after Brandt Snedeker dropped out on their first extra trip down the par-5 18th.

S. Korea wins International Crown

INCHEON, South Korea - South Korea held off challenges from the United States and England to win the eight-nation International Crown for the first time in front of a delighted home crowd at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea.

The top-seeded host team started the final round two points clear of the chasing pack and won two of the four singles matchups to finish with 15 points, four ahead of the defending champion United States and England.

Thailand finished fourth, and Sweden fifth. Australia, Taiwan, and Japan were all eliminated at the end of the third round.
