The Sumter Item won one first place and six second place awards in the South Carolina Press Association's annual Palmy Advertising contest.

The newspaper won first and second places in the advertising design category of Jewelry, Florists and Gift Shops.

First place was an ad for Sumter Lighting & Home designed by Cary Howard, who won four of the newspaper's seven awards, and sold by Mark Pekuri, who sold four of the winning entries.

The headline on the winning ad was "Holiday Open House."
