Sumter moves up a spot to No. 5 in latest poll

Sumter High School moved up a spot to No. 5 among 5A schools in the S.C. Prep Media Football Poll released on Tuesday.

The Gamecocks jumped from sixth to fifth thanks to Fort Dorchester's 43-42 double-overtime loss to Summerville. Fort Dorchester fell from No. 2 to sixth.

Dutch Fork remained No. 1 while T.L. Hanna, Gaffney, Dorman and Sumter filled in the next four spots.

The Gamecocks finished the regular season undefeated at 9-0 and as the Region IV champions after a 27-9 victory over Irmo last week. SHS will be at home in the first round of the state playoffs on Friday, Nov. 9.

The No. 1 teams in the five classifications remained the same. Along with Dutch Fork in 5A, Hartsville is No. 1 in 4A, Dillon in 3A, Abbeville in 2A and Lamar in 1A.

Lee Central to play on Thursday

The Lee Central High School football team has moved its regular-season finale to Thursday due to the possibility of inclement weather on Friday.

The Stallions will play host to Central at 7:30 p.m. at Stallions Stadium.

Along with it being Senior Night, it will also be Appreciation Night for Dorothy Fortune, the recently retired Lee Central girls basketball head coach.

Red Sox exercise $15 million 2019 option on ace Chris Sale

BOSTON - The Red Sox have exercised the 2019 option on ace left-hander Chris Sale.

Sale will earn $15 million in the final season of the five-year contract he signed with the White Sox in 2013. He can become an unrestricted free agent in 2020.

The 2017 AL Cy Young runner-up and a seven-time All-Star, Sale had three strikeouts in the ninth inning of Game 5 of the World Series to close out Boston's fourth championship in 15 years.

The 29-year-old earned his first playoff victory in Game 1 of the AL Division Series against the Yankees. Sale went 12-4 with a 2.11 ERA and 237 strikeouts in 27 regular-season starts in his second season in Boston.
