Sumter Police: Hit-and-run suspect in custody

The suspect in a hit-and-run wreck with a school bus that sent dozens to a hospital on Monday is in custody without incident according to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the Sumter Police Department.

The 35-year-old Marcus Antonio Nelson was identified as the driver who allegedly rear-ended the stopped school bus and fled on Monday morning.

The Sumter School District bus, which was stopped at a red light, was struck from behind after 8 a.m. Monday on Pinewood Road near the intersection of McCrays Mill Road by a black Crown Victoria which fled the scene. The school bus driver and the 34 students were transported to Palmetto Health Tuomey where some were treated for minor injuries.
According to the release, officers later located the vehicle with heavy front-end damage abandoned at a Wright Street residence.

Nelson, of 135 Apollo St., Wedgefield, faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury; driving under suspension, seventh offense; and habitual traffic offender.

Records show the suspect was out on bond involving weapons, drug and multiple traffic offenses at the time of Monday's incident.
