Sumter school board's special called meeting Monday will be mostly executive session

Sumter School District’s Board of Trustees will have a special called meeting tonight at 6 p.m. at the district office, 1345 Wilson Hall Road.

A district spokesperson distributed an agenda for tonight’s meeting last week.

According to the agenda, most discussion by board members will be held behind closed doors in executive session.

After approving the agenda and any open session remarks, the trustees will enter executive session for receipt of legal advice relating to potential adversarial claims and discussion of negotiation incident to proposed contractual arrangements, the agenda states.

The district currently is in a contract with an outside private consultant on a facilities study assessment for all the district’s schools.

In April, the board voted 5-3 to pass the district administration’s consolidation proposal to close two low-enrollment schools (F.J. DeLaine Elementary and Mayewood Middle) and merge students into other larger schools in the same general areas of the county. The board took its action before the completion of the facilities assessment study, which is expected to be completed soon.

Also, tonight in executive session, the board will discuss the administration’s personnel report.

After the board returns to open session, it may or may not take action related to its legal advice, according to the agenda. The board does plan to act on the personnel report.

The board’s regularly scheduled meeting for this month is next week (June 19).
