Sumter Today: The Sheriff's Office attends training on interacting with residents with mental illnesses and disabilities

Posted

For today's show, we're heading to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office for one of their training sessions. The National Alliance on Mental Illness and Protection and Advocacy instructs officers on how to effectively respond to calls involving people with a mental illness or disability by teaching them empathy and patience. They learned a few sign language words, and the course is meant to get officers to think outside of the box when responding to various calls.
