Sumter's Kirkhart wins 2 events in region swim meet

COLUMBIA - Hayden Kirkhart won two events and Abby Hoshour won another for the Sumter High School girls swim team in the Region IV-5A meet on Saturday at Harbison Rec Center.

Kirkhart won the 50-meter freestyle and the 100 backstroke, while Hoshour won the 200 individual medley. Hoshour finished second in the 100 butterfly.

Eighth-grader Samantha Kirkhart also scored points for the Lady Gamecocks with a fifth-place finish in the 200 free.

The 400 free relay team of Hayden Kirkhart, Abby Hoshour, Samantha Kirkhart and Emily Kate Hoshour finished second. The same four girls teamed up to finish third in the 200 free relay, just 0.13 seconds behind second place Irmo.

Each of the girls will be competing in the 5A state meet on Saturday at the University of South Carolina natatorium. Hayden Kirkhart will be swimming in the 50 free and the 100 back, while Abby Hoshour will be in the 50 free and the 100 fly.

The 200 free relay team will be competing as well.

Wilson Hall's Scholz sets record

Wilson Hall's Steve Scholz set a school record in winning the boys 200 free in the Wilson Hall Invitational on Saturday at City of Sumter Aquatics Center.

Scholz broke an 8-year old record with a time of minutes, 9.12 seconds. He also won the 100 back for the Barons, who finished fourth in the meet.

Scholz also swam a leg on the winning 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay teams. He was joined on both teams by Jack Poag, Syd Richardson and Thomas Kang.

Richardson won the 100 fly and Tyler Mahr won the 100 free. Poag was second in both the 100 fly and the 100 breast, and Richardson was second in the 500 free.

Jackson Mahr was third in both the 200 individual medley and the 100 free. Kang was third in the 100 back.

The Wilson Hall girls finished fifth. Madison Smith had a third-place finish in the 500 free.

Also, Twila Horton qualified for the state meet with her times in the 50 and 100 free events.

The combined varsity team finished fourth.

In the junior varsity meets, Wilson Hall won the boys meet and the girls finished seventh. The combined JV team finished second.

Zyeir Gamble ran for two touchdowns, threw for one and returned an interception for another in Bates Middle School's 36-6 victory on Saturday at the Ebenezer field.

Gamble ran for 110 yards and threw his TD pass to Jamal Taylor, who had 50 yards receiving. Terrian Nelson ran for 80 yards and a touchdown and also had three 2-point conversions.

Javion Williams and Aveon McBride both recovered a fumble and Donovan Nelson had an interception. Nathaniel Butler had four tackles.
