One man is behind bars and facing multiple charges for allegedly stealing a vehicle and crashing it Wednesday morning.

Daniel Dale Browder, 38, is accused of stealing a 2005 GMC Canyon from a residence on Pringle Drive and leading Sumter police officers on a chase from Pinewood Road to Clover Street.

Shortly before 6:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, officers received a call that the vehicle — which may have been unlocked — had been stolen.

An officer spotted the vehicle traveling in the Pinewood Road area after 11:45 a.m. and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

However, Browder refused to stop and picked up speed when driving on Pinewood Road, according to the police department.

The vehicle eventually came to a stop after the suspect attempted a right turn onto Clover Street and hit a stopped F-150 pickup truck. Browder was apprehended while trying to flee on foot.

Initially, Browder, of Barkley Road, gave officers a fake name before they were able to identify him.

He is charged with two counts of possession of a stolen vehicle, reckless driving, failure to stop for a blue light, giving false information to police, driving under suspension, being a habitual traffic offender and six counts of contempt of circuit court.

Surety bonds for Browder’s charges equal $18,500.

At the time of his arrest, Browder was also wanted by Sumter County Sheriff’s Office for unrelated charges.

He is being held at Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center.
