Tornado warning issued for Sumter, Clarendon counties

A tornado warning is in effect in Sumter and Clarendon counties until 5 p.m. Monday, and the area remains under a flood advisory.

According to the National Weather Service, at 4:43 p.m., a severe thunderstorm “capable of producing a tornado was located near South Sumter, moving north at 20 miles per hour.”

The agency urged people to take cover immediately.

“If you are outdoors, in a mobile home or in a vehicle, move to an interior room or closet on the lowest floor of a sturdy building immediately,” the agency said.

Sumter and Calhoun counties are also under a flood advisory until 6:15 p.m. Up to 2 inches of rain have reportedly already fallen.

“Most flooding deaths occur in vehicles. Never drive through a flooded roadway,” the advisory says.
