Verlie "MaeBell" Johnson, 96, entered peacefully into her eternal rest on Tuesday, July 3, 2018, at her residence.

Born on April 22, 1922, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Mary Johnson Jenkins. She attended the public schools of Lee County. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and became a faithful member of Mt. Olive AME Church, where she served diligently as a member of the senior usher board, gospel choir, senior unity choir, Burrows Missionary Society, stewardess board three and a dedicated scholar of Sunday school class number one. She was also a member of the Twelve Tribes of Israel.

She leaves to cherish her memories: two daughters, Rosa (Bobby) Brisbon of the home and Mamie (Lutrell) Basnight of Plymouth, North Carolina; one son, Albert Jenkins of Waldorf, Maryland; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was blessed to have been a mother figure to her sibling's children who loved, respected and accepted her as their mother, James Jenkins, David and Mary Green, Elease Diggs and Elizabeth Monroe, all of whom live in various locations. She also leaves a host of other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at her home, 5225 Cotton Acres Road, Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday at Mt. Olive AME Church, 2738 Woodrow Road, U.S. 441, Woodrow, with the Rev. Dr. Friendly J. Gadson, pastor, eulogist.

The remains will be placed in the church at 11 a.m.

The procession will leave at 11:30 a.m. from her home.

Burial will be at Mt. Olive Memorial Garden, Pear Street, Sumter.
