SUMTER - Von Eugene "Woody" Wood, 74, husband to Linda Kay Wright Wood, died on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018, at Palmetto Health Richland.

Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Herbert Wood and Ruth Edith Ireland Wood. Know locally and to his friends as "Woody," Mr. Wood was affectionately called "Cookie" by his family. He was a member of the United States Air Force and served for a year in Vietnam. He served for more than 23 years and retired in 1986 at Shaw Air Force Base as a technical sergeant. Woody enjoyed camping with family and friends, traveling and going on cruises. He was a lifetime member of the MRMA and the VFW Post 3034 as well as an honorary Girl Scout. Woody adored his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be remembered as a very loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by two daughters: Kathy J. Allen of Sumter and Connie D. Sawyer and her husband, Jason, of Chester; three brothers, Larry Archer and his wife, Heather, of Thornton, Colorado, Herman Wood and his wife, Deanna, of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Art Wood of Michigan; two sisters, Deann Gibilaro and her husband, Joe, of Mesa, Arizona, and Peggy Altherr of Tipton, Indiana; and four grandchildren, Andrew V. Allen, Donald K. Sawyer, Ashley N. Allen and Diann K. Sawyer.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Joseph Wood, Ronald Young and Robert Young; and a sister, Darlene Waltz.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tommy McDonald officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home.
