Women learn about heart health at Sumter seminar

"I think we don't scare women enough about their heart health." That's what Cameron Thomasson told women gathered at City Centre last week for a free Love Your Heart seminar sponsored by Palmetto Heart Sumter and Palmetto Health Tuomey.

"We do a great job educating women about breast cancer and when to get a mammogram," the nurse practitioner said, "but heart disease kills more women than all cancers combined!"

Thomasson stressed that the symptoms for a heart attack are different for women than men and urged women to take the signs seriously.

"Women having a heart attack often think that they have flu-like symptoms - tired, short of breath, a stomachache - but all these could be signs of a heart attack, on their own or combined with the better-known symptoms: tight jaw, numbness in your arms and that elephant-on-your-chest feeling."

The hospital and Palmetto Heart will sponsor another free heart health seminar featuring two cardiologists on Tuesday, Feb. 27, from 6-7 p.m. at the Sumter Opera House City Centre. Space is limited. Please register by calling (803) 774-CARE.
