One man is in custody and a teenager is wanted in connection to an attempted armed robbery last week on Bowman Drive that left two men dead.

Kelvin Bell, 33, of Robney Drive, has been arrested, while 17-year-old De'Quan Maurice Stevens, of Bowman Drive, remains at large, according to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the Sumter Police Department.

Bell was arrested Friday without incident in the Crosswell area and charged with two counts of murder. He is being held at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.

Based on a change in state law, Stevens, who goes by the name “Day Day,” is considered a juvenile, but police will pursue charging him as an adult. Previously, 17-year-olds were automatically considered adults. Stevens will turn 18 later this month.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred about 10:15 p.m. on July 25. Officers responded to calls that there were shots fired in the 300 block of Bowman Drive, where they found Diego Alonzo Teletor, 25, of Loring Drive, shot to death outside a home. Gregorio Zarate Chun, 46, of Bowman Drive, was also found shot and was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, where he later died.

Witness accounts indicated the victims and others were standing outside a residence when they were approached by three men wearing all black, McGirt said. The men pulled out handguns and began firing before fleeing toward Dogwood Street.

Police are still trying to determine whether a third person or others were involved in the incident and if there could be a connection to two other robbery-type incidents of a Hispanic male earlier that week in the Hannah Street area. Both victims on Bowman drive were Hispanic.

The police department has set up a hotline for Spanish-speaking residents who may have information or concerns about these cases in the city. Spanish-speaking residents can call (803) 305-7469 to talk with an officer.
