An investigation is ongoing into a shooting that left one man dead and another injured.

At about 10:45 p.m. Tuesday, law enforcement received a call of shots fired. A deputy with Sumter County Sheriff’s Office near the area found a man who had been shot lying in the roadway on Brand Street.

Paul Shereshaw, 42, of Charlotte, was transported to Prisma Health Tuomey, where he died a short time later, according to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer with Sumter Police Department.

As officers continued to investigate, a 26-year-old man, of Sumter, came to the hospital with a gunshot wound. Officers were able to determine the man was standing nearby when shots were fired and he was struck; he is expected to recover, McGirt said.

An unoccupied vehicle in the area was also struck by gunfire.

Family of Shereshaw were notified by Sumter County Coroner’s Office, and an autopsy is scheduled for this week.
