MANNING - More than 100 cancer survivors, their caregivers and friends attended the Celebrate Life Survivor Social held Aug. 31 at Manning United Methodist Church.
The 2018 Clarendon County Relay Committee and American Cancer Society sponsored the social to honor and recognize cancer survivors for their strength, perseverance and their willingness to help others travel down the road to recovery. The reception area was festively decorated in purple, the color for survivors, and white with an arch covered in purple mesh where attendees could have their pictures taken.
Judy Hooks, a survivor, and Rosemary Herring, both members of the Relay committee, said the event wouldn't have been as successful without the donations of delicious desserts and beverages from local businesses and friends.
"Everything was delicious," Herring said. "We're so thankful for everyone's help in putting the event together."
The social was also an opportunity to introduce Meredith Garris, Clarendon's new American Cancer Society community development manager. Garris isn't new to Relay. She has worked for the past 14 years with Orangeburg County's Relay before joining the ACS team.
"I am thrilled to be a part of Clarendon County's Relay," Garris told the attendees. "If you have any questions or need more information on Relay, I'm just a call or email way."
After a couple of tough years, the Relay committee is excited to have Garris on board offering a new insight into Relay with suggestions on how to improve attendance and make Relay more inviting.
"Meredith has brought a new spark to Clarendon Relay efforts," said Mary Howard, a survivor and member of the 2018 Clarendon County Relay Committee. "We're excited about the new year and looking forward to a great 2018 Relay."
At the social, the Relay committee released several important dates for those interested in becoming a part of the 2018 Relay for Life Celebration. At 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 19, the committee will hold an Interest Meeting at Weldon Auditorium. At 6 p.m. on Nov. 13 at a location to be announced, the committee will launch the 2018 Relay Celebration with a Kick-off Dinner. The 2018 Relay for Life Celebration will be held beginning at 5 p.m. on May 4 at Manning High School's Ramsey Field.
If anyone is interested in becoming a part of Clarendon County's 2018 Relay Committee, contact the committee at email@example.com or call (803) 460-1725. Garris can be contacted at Meredith.firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling (803) 707-6766.
