MANNING - The 2020 Clarendon County Cancer OverComers' Walk has been postponed from July 25 to the fall because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"It's not canceled by no means," said event coordinator Sgt. Annett Smith with the Clarendon County Sheriff's Office. "We're holding it on Saturday, Sept. 19. At this time, we're looking into several locations. We will let you know just as soon as the location is confirmed."

Smith said the format of the walk will also be different this year.

"We'll have lots of free food like last year, but we'll be handing out prepared plates for free to individuals in their cars," Smith added. "We'll also have an area for individuals to park and listen as the names on the luminaries are read off. I would love to have another event like last year because everyone loved it so much, but the coronavirus has stopped us from congregating together, and we certainly don't want to risk the health of anyone."

The shirts for the 2020 walk are on sale now. Shirts sized youth through adult XL are $15 each. Adult XXL shirts are $17 each. Adult XXXL shirts are $18. Adult XXXXL shirts are $20, and XXXXXL shirts are $22. All the net proceeds from the sale of the shirts will benefit the Clarendon County Cancer OverComers' organization.

Embroidered denim baseball caps are also on sale at $15 each.

Luminaries are on sale for $10 each. The luminaries will be placed around the new venue.

Free OverComers shirts will also be available to all overcomers who fill out the registration form and include their shirt size. The shirts for OverComers will be available beginning Sept. 1. A location where the shirts can be picked up will be announced closer to Sept. 1.

Registration forms as well as forms to purchase 2020 T-shirts, baseball caps and luminaries can be found on the Clarendon County Cancer OverComers' Facebook page or by calling Smith at (803) 460-3976.

"We are so thankful for the sponsors who made it possible for us to give the shirts to our OverComers at no charge," Smith said. "Businesses, organizations and people have been very generous to us by sponsoring the shirts, gifts of food and donations. What we do would not be possible without their generosity."

More than 300 cancer OverComers attended the inaugural walk last year.

"We hope to hand out free meals to more than 300 this year," Smith added.

The walk's menu will include hotdogs featuring Carolyn Reed-Bradley's famous chili, fried fish, barbecued pork and chicken along with chips and soft drinks. Other special treats will also be available free of charge.

"We will also be requiring everyone to respect social distancing," Smith said. "We want everyone to feel safe. No one will be allowed to exit their vehicle. Plates will be handed out at the end of the event, after the names have been announced. We respectfully ask that everyone be mindful of keeping a safe distance from others and be patient. We want to serve everyone safely."

Smith said she didn't want to cancel the event.

"We want to celebrate our OverComers as well as those who so bravely lost their battle with cancer," Smith said. "This is a chance for the community to come out and celebrate with the OverComers. The food and festivities are free. You can't beat that."
