The Sumter Item sports staff is hosting its second-annual Sumter Item Media Day Fan Fest to showcase the tri-county's high school football programs and look ahead to their fall season.

The 2019 event, presented by title sponsor Hines Furniture, will feature players and coaches from public and private school football teams across Sumter, Lee and Clarendon counties on Saturday, Aug. 3. They will take part in question-and-answer sessions in 30-minute increments discussing their upcoming season with The Sumter Item's sports staff. Each school will be broadcast live on The Sumter Item's Facebook, where the community can comment and send in their own questions, which may be asked in real time.

New this year, performances by schools' bands, dance or cheer teams will also be featured at the event before their team's interview session.

"Last year's Media Day event was such a success, and we really wanted to make it even larger, include different performance groups and bring the public into the party," Publisher Vince Johnson said. "Our goal is to highlight the student-athletes and these teams with an event that gets everyone excited for the fall. This will be a great way for us to continue on our mission to be the area's premier local news source and engage with our community around us."

The 2019 Sumter Item Media Day Fan Fest will be held at USC Sumter's Arts and Letters Building from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and, this year, fans and families are encouraged to attend and wear your high school colors to support your favorite team.

The free event will also feature local vendors and swag, and food trucks including Kona Ice of Sumter will be on scene. With Aug. 3 marking the first publication of The Sumter Item's Weekend Edition, where the paper will start publishing on Saturday instead of Sunday so the sports staff can get high school football and other Friday night sports coverage into the weekend paper, there will be free copies of the paper available for a limited number of attendees.

For those who can't make it, all interviews and coverage of the event will also be streamed live on Facebook at www.facebook.com/theitem, and coverage will run across The Sumter Item's print, video and photo platforms during and after the event.

The event will also coincide with The Sumter Item's annual Gridiron Preview, which will publish before the start of the 2018 football season on Friday, Aug. 23.
