3 Sumter students win essay contest

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 15 announced the winners of its Annual Essay Contest at its Sumter meeting on May 6. The title of the contest was "How can we address and prevent veteran homelessness in our community?"

The contest was open to all local public and private school students in the area and divided into six classifications of grade levels and special needs.

The following students were awarded $25:

- Millwood Elementary School student Owen Trevillian - Third grade-Class I;

- Millwood Elementary School student Maria Santos da Paixuo - Sixth grade-Class II, and;

- Ebenezer Middle School student Taylor Barber - Eighth grade-Class III.

Barber was selected as the South Carolina Class III Division winner and will be awarded an additional prize at the American Legion Auxiliary SC Convention in Columbia on June 1.
