Nine students from each grade in Sumter School District's elementary and middle schools were selected as winners in the 5th-annual City of Sumter Mayor's Christmas Card Contest.

The top two winners - Murrin Reed, sixth-grader at Alice Drive Middle School, and Kali Katz, eighth-grader at Alice Drive Middle School - will have their cards featured on the front and inside of Mayor Joe McElveen's Christmas cards this year.

McElveen said the cards are sent out to leaders at Shaw Air Force Base and other communities.

"We started this a few years ago, and we've had just unbelievable participants and winners in this,"he said. It's a great opportunity for art and the artist to be recognized, he said.

Katz's white swan and decorated tree will be on the front of the cards, and Reed's flying black swan will be on the inside cover.

Other winning artwork included Santa Claus flying over Sumter Opera House, the Recovery Wing at Swan Lake and an elf with Sumter written on his hat.

Sumter School District helped coordinate the contest, and Farmer's Telephone Cooperative provided Katz and Reed with Apple iPads.
