Albert Toney, 82, husband of Rosella George Toney, died Jan. 1, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born July 23, 1913, in Elliott, he was a son of the late Walter and Estell Sumpter Toney. He was reared in a Christian home and, at an early age, joined New Zion AME Church. He faithfully served the church as a steward, class leader, loyal member of the Sunday School Class No. 5 and church treasurer. Mr. Toney attended the public schools of Lee and Sumter counties. He was a veteran of World War II, serving his country at home and abroad with distinction, completing a tour of duty in Germany. Upon returning to civilian life, he pursued the family interests in farming and was later employed by Georgia Pacific as a machinist. He balanced the demands of work with hobbies that included fishing, bird and deer hunting, and gardening. He participated in civic affairs and was a member of the NAACP and was active in the Democratic party.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Rosella G. Toney of Sumter; four sisters, Amelia Bradley of Winston Salem, N.C., Janie Slater of Greensboro, N.C., Sadie Reynolds and Eula Williamson of Philadelphia, Pa.; two brothers, Leroy Toney and Henry Toney, both of Elliott; one aunt, Josephine DeLaine of Sumter; five sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; several nieces, nephews and a host of other family members and friends.

Viewing will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Zion AME Church, 789 Cooper Mill Road, Wisacky community, Bishopville, with the Rev. Archie S. Temoney, pastor, assisted by Presiding Elder Robert L. McCants officiating, the Revs. Alford Bradley, Francis Gathers and Franklin W. Spears. Burial will be in New Zion AME Cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the residence, 816 Legare St., Sumter.
