Alva Murray Adams was born Jan. 13, 1918, the second of three daughters born to the late James M. and Lucia T. Murray of Greeleyville. She departed this life on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2017.
Alva accepted Jesus Christ at an early age; she grew up as a member of Wilson United Methodist Church, Greeleyville. Alva graduated from Williamsburg Training School (now CE Murray High School) and received her Bachelor's Degree from Morris College, Sumter. She taught school in Williamsburg County.
Later, she moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she met and married Booker T. Adams Sr. She was employed at Dorothy Bullitt as an administrative assistant/sales before becoming ill in 1978. She spent the last 21 years in West Los Angeles with her daughter, Bessie.
She joined Morris Chapel Baptist Church in Philadelphia and later became a charter member of Triumph Baptist Church, where her pastor was the Rev. James S. Hall Jr.
Alva was the mother of four, Betty P. Sumter (Sumter), Bessie Adams (West Los Angeles, California), Booker T. Adams Jr. (preceded her in death) and Stanley Adams (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania).
Left to cherish her memories along with Betty, Bessie and Stanley (Debbie) are her youngest sister, Frances Murray Pasley (Greeleyville); seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and other family members.
The family received friends from noon to 6 p.m. at 27 Albert Spears Drive, Sumter.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home, 821 N. Main St., Sumter, with the Rev. Marion Newton, senior pastor of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. George Windley, Minister Napoleon Bradford and the Rev. John Henry Kennedy.
The procession will leave the home at 10:20 a.m. Burial will be in the family site at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Greeleyville.
