MANNING - The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68 is pleased to announce 2020 Girls State delegates.

- Manning High School - Hardy Goff, Tracie Holladay, Abby Richburg and Anna Richburg;

- Laurence Manning Academy - Mason Lee, Bailey Moore and Brooke Reed; and

- C.E. Murray High School - Malana Washington.

Palmetto Girls State delegates are chosen based on individual qualities such as character, leadership ability and interest in government. A review of honors, awards, extra-curricular activities, employment history and civic and church involvement is considered in the selection process.

As part of the selection process, each girl was asked to complete an application and answer three essay questions about government in her own words and was interviewed by members of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68.

These are unprecedented times, and because of the coronavirus, the 2020 Palmetto Girls State session scheduled for June has been canceled. All delegates will receive a Palmetto Girls State Session Certificate.

"The delegates selected were chosen for their character and exceptional leadership skills. American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68 plans to host a luncheon in their honor at a later date," said Elizabeth DuRant, Unit 68 Girls State chairwoman.

The South Carolina Department of the American Legion Auxiliary has organized and administered Palmetto Girls State since 1937. Tuition for the program is paid for by the local auxiliary that raises money through fundraisers and sponsorships provided by local businesses as well as donations. The program emphasizes many of the tenets of the American Legion Auxiliary, including the concept of "God and Country" and respect for the American flag.

The American Legion Auxiliary participates in a variety of activities and programs focusing on three major areas: veterans, young people and the community. Unit 68 meets the second Monday of the month at 6 p.m. at the William-Burgess American Legion Post 68, 552 Sunset Drive, Manning.
