COLUMBIA - Rebecca "Becky" Bean, communications manager with the South Carolina School Boards Association, has been promoted to director of communications.

Bean, a former Sumter resident who has more than 10 years of public relations experience, joined the SCSBA team in January 2016 and has coordinated marketing and information efforts for the association and its South Carolina School Boards Insurance Trust. Before joining SCSBA, she was the communications director for Lexington County School District One and director of marketing and public relations at the University of South Carolina Sumter.

In her new role, she will oversee communications and marketing efforts of the association, the awards program, school board recognitions, media relations, social media campaigns and more.

"SCSBA and SCSBIT are fortunate to have the expertise and experience of Becky leading our communications," said SCSBA Executive Director Scott Price. "She has made many impactful contributions to our programs and services for the 79 school boards governing our state's districts. In her role, she will continue to oversee all communications and marketing efforts for both associations."

She is a member of the National School Public Relations Association and is immediate past president of the South Carolina chapter of the National School Public Relations Association.

In 2016, the National School Public Relations Association named Bean to the 2016 class of "NSPRA's 35 under 35," as one of 35 school and education public relations professionals under the age of 35 to be recognized as among the nation's best communicators.

Bean was named an NSPRA 2017-18 "Frontrunner" for the Southeast by the NSPRA Executive Board, recognizing her as an emerging leader, demonstrating professional leadership at the state and national level.

Bean is a frequent presenter at association conferences on communications, public relations, and responding to the public and media.

Bean resides in Camden with her husband, Ryan, and children, Bradley and Macy.
