Bertie Dennis Carnes, 89, widow of Ralph Edward Carnes, died on Friday, Sept. 17, 2021, at The Retreat at Carolina Bay in Hartsville.

Born on Sept. 14, 1932, in Darlington, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Marion Dennis and Abbie Lillian Hunter Dennis.  She was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.  Mrs. Carnes retired from Campbell’s Soup Co.  She was a member of American Legion Post 15 Auxiliary, Order of the Easter Star Chapter 20, The Shepherd Center and the Lunch Bunch Sunshine Club. She was honored with the State of South Carolina Governor’s Volunteer Award in 2001 by Gov. Jim Hodges.

Survivors include one son, Michael Edward Carnes (Marian); two daughters, Cindy Carnes Brown (Tommy) and Karen Carnes Segars (Camp); six grandchildren, Tonya Shaw (Frank), Kevin Brown (Caroline), Matthew Carnes, Mark Carnes, William Segars and Hunter Segars, six great-grandchildren, Megan Shaw, Ashleigh Shaw, Dalton Brown, Drake Brown, Drew Brown and Anna Porter; sister-in-law, Frances Dennis; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Daniel Marion Dennis Jr. and William H. Dennis (Bill) Sr.; and four sisters, Mary Azilea Matthews, Rebecca Lillian Hatchell, Ruth Naomi Baker and Frances Vasti Dennis.  

Pallbearers will be Kevin Brown, Matthew Carnes, Mark Carnes, William Segars, Hunter Segars and Frank Shaw.   

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Wes Conner officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service.
