Sumter School District's Board of Trustees made yet another change to its agenda for tonight's meeting on Sunday afternoon by adding the discussion of a personnel matter in executive session and then a possible action on it when it returns to open session.
The original agenda, distributed on Thursday to the media, called for a discussion on reopening Mayewood Middle School to include costs associated with the change and then a possible vote on the matter immediately following the discussion. No executive session behind closed doors was listed on the agenda.
Late Friday afternoon, the board made the change to add an executive session between the discussion of reopening Mayewood and the potential vote on the school, which was just closed at the end of last school year.
The updated agenda, distributed then to the media, simply stated the board would receive legal advice from its attorneys during the closed session.
With Sunday's additional change, the agenda now states trustees will also have "discussion of employment matters, appointment, compensation, promotion, demotion, discipline and/or release of an employee" in executive session.
After returning to open session, the board may take action on the new item, according to the new agenda, before a possible vote on reopening Mayewood.
By law, the board and district must give the media at least 24 hours' notice of a board meeting or a change to a public agenda. Sunday's updated agenda was emailed out at 3:55 p.m. Tonight's meeting begins at 6 p.m.
Tonight's meeting will be in the media center at Furman Middle School, 3400 Bethel Church Road. Like all board meetings, it's open to the public and public participation is listed on the agenda.
