Wofford College

SPARTANBURG - Wofford College has awarded 149 merit scholarships to incoming students. Sumter students receiving scholarships are Cameron Dixon and Haley McCaffrey.

The College of Charleston

CHARLESTON - The College of Charleston awarded more than 1,500 undergraduate and graduate degrees in May 2020. The graduates will be recognized by the college during a special ceremony tentatively planned for Oct. 11.

The following local students earned degrees:

- Sumter - Caroline Flowers, Bachelor of Arts in Dance; Alyssa Owings, Bachelor of Arts in English and an additional major in Secondary Education Cognate; Meagan McMahon, Bachelor of Arts in Arts Management and a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre; Lee Ann Releford, Bachelor of Science in Psychology; Nathaniel Dabbs, Bachelor of Science in Anthropology; Tiffany Jones, Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science; Sean McAlister, Bachelor of Arts in Theatre; Bre'asia Canty, Bachelor of Science in Biology; Ty'shon Witherspoon, Bachelor of Science in Sociology; Alix Skywalker, Bachelor of Arts in Biology; Kyerra Williams, Bachelor of Arts in Political Science;

- Bishopville - Aleah Johnson, Bachelor of Arts in Political Science;

Mary Baldwin University

STAUNTON, Virginia - Ciara Hernandez of Sumter was named to the Spring 2020 Honors List at Mary Baldwin University.

Students named to the Honors List earned grade-point averages of 3.75 to 4.00. To be eligible, a student must be a degree candidate and must have earned at least 12 semester hours for the grading period.

Bismark State College

BISMARCK, North Dakota - Jameson Pate of Sumter has been named to the President's Honor Roll with a 4.00 GPA for the Spring 2020 semester at Bismarck State College.

Students must maintain at least a 3.50 grade point on a 4.00 scale while enrolled in at least 12 semester hours of classes to qualify for the BSC President's Honor Roll.

Troy University

TROY, Alabama - Troy University is pleased to recognize students who completed the requirements for graduation during the Spring Semester and Term 4 of the 2019-20 academic year. The spring semester includes graduates from the Troy, Alabama, campus. Term 4 graduates include students at Troy's campuses in Dothan, Phenix City and Montgomery, Alabama, along with teaching sites outside of Alabama and online.

Sumter students who graduated are Mae McQuillar with a graduate degree from the College of Education and Samantha Mitchell with an Undergraduate degree from the College of Education.

University of Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - The University of Alabama awarded some 6,326 degrees this spring. Among the graduates was Rebekah St.Cyr of Sumter, who received a Bachelor of Arts in Communication & Information Sciences.

The recent change to remote learning during this unprecedented time affected the university's plans for traditional commencement activities.

However, commencement is a milestone, and the university wants graduates to have the opportunity to walk across the stage in celebration of their success. Although any plans are contingent on how the summer outlook progresses, all spring graduates are invited to participate in the summer commencement events scheduled for Friday, July 31, and Saturday, Aug. 1.

"We will also be recognizing the achievements of our spring 2020 graduating class through online and social media outlets to highlight our shared pride in them," said UA President Stuart Bell.

Hinds Community College

RAYMOND, Mississippi - Hinds Community College President's Scholars have been named for the spring 2020 semester. President's Scholars are those with a cumulative 4.0 grade-point average.

Among those recognized as a Spring 2020 President's Scholar is Michael Goodman of Turbeville.

Valdosta State University

VALDOSTA, Georgia - Valdosta State University congratulates Elizabeth Spurlock of Sumter for earning a spot on the Spring 2020 Dean's List.

Dean's List honors are reserved for the highest-achieving students at VSU. Spurlock is one of more than 2,100 distinguished and accomplished students recognized for exemplifying excellence in the attainment of their educational goals.

To qualify for Dean's List at VSU, students must achieve a semester grade-point average of 3.50 or higher on nine or more semester hours with an institutional grade-point average of 3.00 or higher.

Please note that developmental studies, transient, and graduate students are not eligible for Dean's List status.
