LYNCHBURG -- Candace Atkinson Gibbs, 42, died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, at McLeod Hospice, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Lynchburg. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation was Tuesday evening at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home, Florence.

Candace was born in Sumter, a daughter of Billy Atkinson and Meechie Nesbitt Rankin. She was a graduate of Hudgens Academy, Lynchburg. She worked as a rural carrier associate with the Lynchburg Post Office. A member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Candace was devoted to the church's youth activities. Candace actively supported the East Clarendon Wolverine Cheerleading Squad, of which her daughter, Amelia, is a member.

Survivors are her husband, Clark Gibbs of Lynchburg; two children, Amelia Atkinson Gibbs and Garrett Clark Gibbs, both of the home; her mother, Meechie Nesbitt Rankin and her husband, Mike, of Lynchburg; her father, Billy Atkinson of Lynchburg; a brother, Chance Atkinson and his wife, Rachael, of Kingstree; nieces, Bailey Atkinson and Mary Logan Atkinson; nephews, Dylan Atkinson and Hampton Beard; and her maternal grandmother, Myrlene Nesbitt.

Layton-Anderson Funeral Home, 4210 W. Palmetto St., Florence, is assisting the family with arrangements.
