Deacon Carl Charles Greene, affectionately known as "Greene," husband of Shirley Hill Greene, was born on Dec. 5, 1948, in Sumter, to the union of the late Della Mae Frazier and Bishop Arthur Greene. He was reared by Rita V. Greene.

He departed this earthly life on Friday, June 19, 2020, at Prisma Health Hospital, surrounded by loved ones.

Carl was educated in Sumter County and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1967. He enlisted in the United States Air Force on Oct. 13, 1967, and retired with 24 years of service as a master sergeant, assigned to the 169th Security Police Squadron at McEntire Air National Guard Base, Eastover. Carl was gainfully employed with South Carolina Gas & Electric (SCG&E) as a service supervisor and retired after 25 years of service. Carl co-owned and operated Greene's Residential Care Facility for 30 years, Greene's Maintenance for 15 years and Magnolia Adult Day Center.

Carl gave his life to Christ at an early age. He was a pioneer member of Church of God of Prophecy, where he served faithfully on the financial committee. He was ordained as a deacon at Bethany Fellowship Baptist Church on Aug. 6, 2011. Carl was an active member of the Sumter County community, where he was an admired and respected mentor to many.

Carl's memory will be cherished and lived on through his wife, Shirley Hill Greene; three daughters, Capt. Kimberly R. Greene of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Bridget N. Greene of Houston, Texas, and Ashleigh D. (Kendell) Greene of Sumter; six grandchildren, Senior Airman Antonio U. Myers Jr. of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Tywionne M. Williams Jr. of Sumter, Private Christion K.C. Greene of Fort Gordon, Georgia, Alijuandra R.L. Williams, Cameron D. Williams and Bryson J. Pollard, all of Sumter; nine siblings, Bobra (the Rev. David) Gary Sims and Cedric (Jackie) Greene, both of Sumter, Eston Stout and Alva "Aku" Stout, both of Houston, retired Chief Warrant Officer 3 Laverene (retired Col. Eric) Witherspoon of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, Angel (Amy) Vanterpool Sr., Dolores Vanterpool, Symra Lanclos and Giovan "GiGi" Greene, all of Houston; two aunts, Ruby Vanterpool of Houston and Zulah Hodge of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands; one adopted brother, Michael Brown of Columbia; five sisters-in-law, Edith Mae Hill, Mary Lou (Randolph) Harvin, Jessie Benjamin, Carolyn Spencer and Roberta (Gregory) Sharper; two brothers-in-law, Leroy Hill of Sumter and Kenny Adams Sr. of Nauet, New York; one goddaughter, Courtney Shaw of Sumter; one godson, Malachi T. Williams of Sumter; special cousin, Benjamin Frierson of Harlem, New York; adopted son, Alonza Washington of Sumter; three adopted daughters, Nikisha A. Carr of Houston, Rachelle M. Daniels and Tawn Oliver of Sumter; two sons-in-law, Antonio U. Myers Sr. and Tywionne M. Williams Sr., both of Sumter; special friends, Virgil Mack and Lloyd Daniels of Sumter; the Sumter Stop Crew; and a host of special cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his aunt, Elizabeth "Aunt Bet" (Randolph) Gary; mother-in-law, Bertha (Henry) Slater Hill; father-in-law, Theodore "Ted" Ragin; two brothers, Joseph Gary and Lennie Frazier; one sister, Barbara M. Adams; two brothers-in-law, George Hill and Curtis Benjamin; and one sister-in-law, Rosa Lee Hill.

Public viewing will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at Job's Mortuary.

Deacon Greene will be placed in the church at noon on Monday for viewing until the hour of service.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday at Victory Temple Church of God of Prophecy, 1670 S. Guignard Parkway, Sumter, SC 29150 with Pastor Dave Brown officiating and the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr., eulogist. Interment will follow at 9 a.m. on Tuesday at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, 927 S. Main St., Sumter, SC 29150.
