Funeral services for Carl James Sr. will be held at noon on Thursday at Mount Pisgah AME Church, 217 W. Bartlette St., Sumter, with the Rev. Laddie N. Howard officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Memorial Park.

The public may view from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel, Sumter.

Mr. James will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. for further viewing until the hour of service.

Mr. James Sr., husband of Emily Dixon James, transitioned on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019, at his residence in Sumter.

Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Raymond and Sally Davis James. He was educated in the public schools of Congruity and was a graduate of Congruity High School Class of 1950. He was raised in Congruity Presbyterian Church and later joined Mount Pisgah AME Church, where he served on the Steward Board and with the Sons of Allen. He served his country in the United States Army for 23 years and retired. After retirement, he was employed by Sumter School District 17. He was loved and revered by all his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Mr. James was preceded in death by a son, Carl James Jr.; and two sisters, Linda Roberts and Mary A. James.

Survivors include his wife, Emily Dixon James; a son, Arnold B. (Aida) James of Frederick, Maryland; two granddaughters, Ani and Ave' James; five sisters, Edith (Malachi) Wells of New London, Connecticut, Shirley A. James of Sumter, Ella (John) Gooden of Moncks Corner, Sarah Chiles of Columbia and Ella (John) Gooden; one brother, Charles James of Elizabeth, New Jersey; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Palmer Memorial Chapel of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.
