Carlene W. Burgess died on Tuesday morning, Jan. 30, 2018, at Sumter Health & Rehab.
She was born on March 6, 1932, a daughter of the late Frierson and Lizzie Washington. She was educated in the public schools of Pittsburgh. She was married to the late Douglas Burgess Sr. and to this union 10 children were born.
Her survivors include the children, Douglas (Loretta) Burgess Jr. of Savannah, Georgia, and JoAnn (Calvin) Sharpe, Barbara (William) Martin, Kenneth Burgess, Frank (Ethel) Burgess, Karen (Paul) Burgess and Kevin (Bernice) Burgess, all of Sumter; one sister, Kassie Keys of Philadelphia; seven sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Bonnie L. Burgess and Audrey L. Burgess; and one son, Carl L. Burgess.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Paul AME Church, 835 Plowden Mill Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Frederick F. Graves, pastor, officiating.
The body will be placed in the church from 10 a.m. until the hour of service. Interment will follow at St. Paul AME Cemetery.
Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
