The Laurence Manning Academy varsity football team finds itself in an uncommon position heading into Friday's football game: looking to avoid a 3-game losing streak. Being able to do that though will not be an easy chore as the Swampcats play host to SCISA 3A juggernaut Hammond at Billy Chitwood Field beginning at 7:30 p.m.
After losing to First Baptist 26-7 two weeks ago, LMA dropped a close one in Columbia last week, falling to Cardinal Newman 14-7.
The Swampcats are now 3-2 in 3A play and 4-3 overall.
"We have gone about our business like we always have," Laurence Manning head coach Robbie Briggs said of bouncing back from the loss and preparing for the Skyhawks. "(We'll) focus on what we didn't do well and continue to get better."
Hammond is 5-0 in SCISA 3A play, 7-0 overall and is coming off a big 42-14 win at Porter-Gaud. Briggs knows his team will be facing a tough task this week.
"Hammond has a tremendous team," said Briggs, whose squad lost to Hammond in the 3A championship game last season. "It will take a big effort, mentally and physically, from our guys to challenge them this week. We have to finish off drives in the red zone and eliminate the big plays on defense."
Hurricane Michael prevented the Swampcats from practicing on Thursday, but it should be smooth sailing on Friday night.
"It's going to be a perfect night tomorrow night (Friday)," Briggs said. "Weather affected us today as we canceled our normal Thursday walk-through."
Laurence Manning will not be at full strength on Friday night after being bitten by the injury bug.
"We have three starters out," Briggs said. "(Senior halfback/linebacker) Grayson Gamble, (senior halfback/linebacker) Brad Goodson, and (sophomore wide receiver/cornerback) Marcus Lane."
