CHARLES V. KAMMERMANN

Retired Lt. Col. Charles V. Kammermann, 83, husband of the Rev. Cheryl Janes Kammermann, died on Friday, Sept. 18, 2020, at NHC Healthcare in Sumter.

Born on Jan. 14, 1937, in Pontiac, Illinois, he was a son of the late Charles E. Kammermann. He received a bachelor's degree from San Diego State University and a master's degree from Ball State University. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 32 years of service and was a Vietnam War veteran with 144 refuelings aboard the KC-135 refueling plane. He was a co-principal and teacher at Bethune Charter School and operated Kammermann Trucking Co. He also coached basketball at St. Francis Xavier High School. He was a member of Sumter First Church of the Nazarene, the Sumter Community Concert Band and the Camden Community Concert Band. He was a team leader for three work and witness mission groups, two to Honduras and one to Russia.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years; a son, retired Lt. Col. Christian L. Kammermann (Cheri) of Poquoson, Virginia; and two granddaughters, Caley Kammermann and Colby Dyer (Hayden).

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Christa Kearney and the Rev. Cinda Ann Kammermann.

A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 10 amM. Wednesday at Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Greg Pressley officiating.
