Charles Wayne McManus, 64, husband of Brenda Nicks McManus, died on Monday, Sept. 20, 2021, at his home in Summerville.

Wayne was born in Conway, the middle child of Pearl Elizabeth "Betty" Joyner McManus and the late William Clyde McManus of Sumter. The family resided in Myrtle Beach and later moved to Sumter, where he spent his formative years. He attended Willow Drive Elementary and Wilson Hall Academy, graduating in 1974. They were active members of Grace Baptist Church. Growing up, he worked in the family's pharmacy, Sumter Cut Rate Drugs.

After high school, he attended the College of Charleston and Sumter Technical College. He later became a bench jeweler at Sylvan's Jewelers in Columbia and Darden's Jewelers in Myrtle Beach. While working with Darden's, he successfully completed course work at the Holland School for Jewelers in Selma, Alabama. As part of his association with Darden's, he was instrumental in the development of the Jewelry Outlet stores in Myrtle Beach and Spartanburg, where he served as manager of both locations. He later worked with a national jewelry chain as store manager in Dallas, Texas, and the Washington, D.C. area stores.

After a successful jewelry career, and upon being diagnosed with MS in 1992, Wayne pursued an IT degree at Charleston Southern University. While attending CSU he also created and operated his own internet broadband service business. In addition to his business accomplishments, he took pride in the work he did with his community and the state and national MS Society. Above all, he was a loving husband and father.

Surviving family members include his mother, Betty McManus of Sumter; his wife, Brenda McManus of Summerville; their four children, Laura Burress Sorrow (Josh) of Somerset, Kentucky, Lelia Burress Valponi (Dominic) of Mount Pleasant, Charlie McManus of Charleston and Cameron McManus of Los Angeles, California; a brother, Mike McManus (Darlene) of Garden City; a sister, Phyllis Wescott (Buddy) of Sumter; six grandchildren; and beloved aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2, at Old Fort Baptist Church Sanctuary, 10505 Dorchester Road, Summerville, SC 29485 with Dr. Eric Lethco officiating.

Memorials may be sent to his church or the Lowcountry LEAP Ministry outreach program.

His family would like to extend a special thanks to the many friends and medical professionals who helped Wayne on his long MS journey.

Wayne will no longer be crippled by pain; because of Jesus, Christians will never meet for the last time.
