Last week, the City of Sumter broke ground on a new Shot Pouch Greenway trailhead at Swan Lake Iris Gardens, which will include a new parking lot off Bland Avenue, updated landscaping and green space, according to the city's Facebook page. Construction is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year. The city thanked the Sumter delegation and House Speaker Rep. Murrell Smith for their support and contributions in securing funding for the renovations. Shot Pouch Greenway is a more than 3-mile paved pedestrian trail running from Dillon Park to Swan Lake Iris Gardens, a $4 million project made possible through a previous Penny for Progress initiative. Its grand-opening ceremony was held at the beginning of 2023.
