Democratic Congressman James E. Clyburn, majority whip of the U.S. House of Representatives, won his 16th term to serve as the United States representative for South Carolina in District 6 during Tuesday night’s elections.
Vote tallies were still coming in Tuesday night, but the Associated Press called the race about 9 p.m. He collected more than 60% of Sumter County’s voters.
Votes are unofficial until they are certified later this week.
As a national leader from Sumter, he has championed rural and economic development, and many of his initiatives have become law. Clyburn is also a supporter of historic preservation and restoration programs. His efforts have restored numerous historic buildings and sites on campuses of historically Black colleges and universities.
“I am grateful to the people of South Carolina’s 6th district for trusting me to serve another term in Congress,” Clyburn said in a news release.
Clyburn said his focus will remain on doing everything he can to make America’s greatness accessible and affordable for all, a motto on which he ran.
“Providing good-paying jobs and educational opportunities for our children; controlling the costs of health care and putting broadband in every home and business; and protecting Social Security and Medicare will remain my focus in the 118th Congress,” he said in a statement.
