Column by Sumter Pastor Joey Durham: God will supply all our needs

I want to bring this thought to your heart today, "Consider the Care of our Heavenly Father." My text is in Matthew 6:26-29, where we read, "Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these." (KJV)

Here in this passage, the Lord Jesus presents a practical lesson in easily understood illustrations that will help those who personally know Him as their Savior to avoid being anxious, distressed, scared and uneasy about present-day circumstances and simply trust our Father's care.

Our Lord's first illustration has to do with birds. Now we all are familiar with birds. I believe it is safe to say that no one has ever seen a bird sitting behind a desk in front of a computer or with a uniform on directing traffic or behind the wheel of a tractor plowing a field. Every bird that is existing on this earth does nothing to earn a living; instead, the God of Heaven has taken responsibility to feed the fowl of the air, and the Lord has said, "Are ye not much better than they?" Our Lord's other illustration calls our attention to the "lilies of the field" and reminds us that they "toil not, neither do they spin," that is, they do not enter into any kind of fashioning or clothing for themselves. The Lord declared that even the great King Solomon at the height of his glory as Israel's king was not arrayed like He alone can beautify a lily.

So why spend our lives worrying over the circumstances of our day, what we will eat or drink and what we will wear? If God so clothes the grass of the field and takes care of even the lowliest of birds, why should we spend our time in worrisome concern when we have a heavenly Father who knows that we have needs? What was the point Jesus Christ was trying to make? It is found in verse 33, where we see, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." (KJV)

Child of God, we just need to love the Lord with all our heart and seek to honor God in our life, and God Almighty will be the supplier for our needs.
