HINES FURNITURE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Crestwood's West has record-setting performance in 2OT win over Andrew Jackson

Down by six points in double overtime against Andrew Jackson on Friday, Crestwood needed a big play from a pass-catcher.

In stepped Dominick West.

West capped off a record-setting performance by catching the game-tying score. The Knights would go on to win, as the extra point shot through the uprights for a 50-49 victory. On top of the win, the senior receiver earned Hines Furniture Athlete of the Week honors for his electric showing on the gridiron.

"What Dom is doing this season, it's a credit to his development throughout the years," head coach Roosevelt Nelson said of West. "He's a worker, and he's showing that the hard work pays off. He's not surprising me because I knew the potential he has, what kind of kid he is. He's a kid that can make things happen with the ball in his hands.

"I'm proud of him, proud of the work he put into it. It couldn't go to a better kid."

West was excellent from beginning to end on Friday. He finished with 196 yards, which set a school record previously held by current Western Kentucky tight end Joshua Simon. He added two touchdowns and a 2-point conversion.

"I wasn't aware at all," West said of his new school record. "When I heard that, I thought they were playing at first. I was speechless."

West caught a total of eight passes in the win, which is a testament to his ability to get open, according to Nelson.

"It's nothing we're doing scheme-wise to get him the ball; he just runs good routes," Nelson said. "He understands coverages and leverages, and he does a great job getting himself open."

The game was a roller coaster for the Knights. Crestwood leapt out to a 3-score lead in the opening half, but Andrew Jackson slowly chipped away at that lead. The Knights found a groove in the third quarter, stretching their lead back to 14 points, only to see Andrew Jackson tie the game with under two minutes to play. A missed extra point gave Crestwood a chance to win it in overtime before a blocked PAT in double overtime, paired with West's touchdown, gave the Knights the win.

"To start off, we were doing good. We were just rolling, and it was just like we released the gas. They were on another level and came back," West said. "We had that halftime talk that we had to go harder. They told us if we wanted it, we had to go harder."

West was honored to have his number called on the final play of the game.

"I was speechless when I caught it," West said. "I knew it was coming my way. I told them to put the ball in my hands, and we'll see what happens."

The game was an exclamation point for West early in the season. He's been asked to step into an expanded role this fall after the graduation of Nick Fortune and Maki Williams, Crestwood's top two pass-catchers a year ago. He wanted to prove that he was more than ready to fill the void, along with fellow wide out Nigel Johnson.

"We had to fill in those shoes," West said. "Now it's our time to shine."
