Indecent exposure for sex act in front of window

A 33-year-old Sumter man has been charged with indecent exposure after he reportedly stood on a table in his house and performed a sexual act on himself in the direction of another person.

Adam Amerson is accused of performing the act "willfully and maliciously" in front of a window with the curtains open in his Peach Orchard Road home on July 8, according to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.

He remained detained in the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center as of Monday with a $5,000 surety bond after being arrested on July 10.

Burglary of food from barn, tools, truck

An Alcolu man faces charges after reportedly stealing food from a barn on Wedgefield Road.

Derek Ray Cutter, 36, of U.S. 301, is accused of illegally entering a barn on July 9. He is also accused of stealing a black Ford 350 and tools valued at more than $20,000 from the property, according to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.

He was taken to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center, where his bond is set at a total of $1,532.50 for additional violations of open container in a motor vehicle and driving under suspension. He has been charged with first-degree burglary and grand larceny of a value of $10,000 or more, bond for both of which has been denied.

His next court date is set for Sept. 26, according to inmate public records.

Employee accused of stealing from register

A woman is accused of stealing money from the business where she worked on Manning Road, according to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.

Varnessa Lashea Nelson, 33, of Weeks Street, reportedly gave customers the correct change but kept money from transactions for her personal use between May 21 and June 20, according to a July 10 warrant.

Her employer conducted an independent audit after it was discovered the inventory was short. Law enforcement obtained documents showing the voided transactions conducted by Nelson, a video of her shift and a written statement from the district manager regarding the allegations.

Nelson faces a charge of breach of trust with fraudulent intent of a value of more than $2,000 but less than $10,000.

Nelson was transported to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center on Thursday. She posted a $5,000 bond later that day.
