Dalzell woman, 32, charged for allegedly giving son a black eye, leaving other son with bruises after spanking

A 32-year-old Dalzell woman was arrested on Jan. 2 and charged with unlawful neglect of a child for allegedly hitting one son in the face and leaving the other with bruises after a spanking, according to Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman’s name is being withheld out of consideration for her children.

According to an incident report, a deputy responded to a residence on Queen Chapel Road to accompany a S.C. Department of Social Services case worker during a welfare check for the two children on Nov. 30, 2018.

The case worker went to the house in response to a complaint alleging one of the children came to school with a black eye caused by his mother. The complaint also alleged the child had not been to school for four days.

After entering the house, the suspect told the case worker her oldest son got a black eye while fighting and playing around with his brother, states the report.

While speaking separately with the two children, the oldest child said his mother hit him during the previous weekend when his mother walked in on him, his brother and cousins talking.

He said his mother knocked him to the floor, put her knees on his hands to hold him down and struck him in the face with a closed fist, giving him a black eye.

The second child said his mother spanked him with a belt leaving bruises and welts, according to the report.

The case worker requested the children be placed with another family member while DSS continued to investigate the incident.

The woman was reportedly cooperative with the request.

She was transported to Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center where she was given a $10,000 personal recognizance bond.

She has since been released after making bond.
