Dorothy Allene Jones Compton, 95, widow of Arland Hasty Compton Sr., died on Sunday, July 19, 2020, at National Healthcare Center.
Born in Gaillard's Crossroads Providence Township in Dalzell, she was a daughter of the late Charles Lorenza Jones and Clyde Weldon Jones. Mrs. Compton was baptized and confirmed at Providence Methodist Episcopal Church South. As a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for more than 70 years, she was active in the Trinity Fellowship Sunday School Class and served in several areas of the church. Mrs. Compton was a sustaining member of the Junior Welfare League, member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Sumter Art Association, volunteered with United Ministries and volunteered with the Red Cross after Hurricane Hugo. She retired as vice president of Crosswell and Company Wholesale Grocery and Hardware.
Surviving are two sons, Dr. Arland H. Compton Jr. (Nora) and Robert B. Compton, both of Sumter; two daughters, Elaine C. Morris (George) of High Point, North Carolina, and Elizabeth C. Compton of Sumter; five grandchildren, Michael A. Compton (Darcy), David W. Compton (Barbara), Benjamin H. Compton (Laura), G. Hunter Morris (Ashley) and E.S.Weldon Morris (Jim Hussey); eight great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Marjorie Compton Lawrence of Sumter.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Lena Jones Hill, Frances Jones Henry, Annie Mae Jones Smyre, Lorenza (Ren) Jones, Hazel Hogan Terrar and Edmunds Hogan.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Joseph James and the Rev. Dr. Reginald Thackston officiating.
All attendees are asked to wear masks and maintain social distancing during the graveside services.
