"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith" 2 Timothy 4: 7
Sister Dorothy Mae Ramsey, affectionately called "Tent," was born Nov. 17, 1940, in Sumter, to the late Hattie Ramsey. She departed this earthly life and entered into eternal rest on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024, at Sumter East Health and Rehabilitation Center, in Sumter.
Dorothy was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Ebenezer High School in 1959. After graduation, she ventured to New York City where she was employed in the diamond and jewelry district with the Moba Jewelry Firm. She loved her job and enjoyed working with gold and diamonds, which involved traveling to jewelry shows in and out of the country for over 40 years. When she relocated back to South Carolina, she was employed as a substitute teacher for Sumter School District 2 and was a Direct Care Specialist for the Sumter County Disabilities and Special Needs Board until she retired.
Being reared in a Christian home, Dorothy accepted Christ in her life at an early age and became a member at Enon Baptist Church where her spiritual journey began. She was very active in the church as a youngster in various ministries. After relocating to New York City, she connected with the Jamaica-Queens Baptist Church Community. She served on several ministries, which included the Ushers and Pastor's Aid Ministries, Sunday School Ministry, and in-depth study in ministry leadership to name a few. When she returned to Sumter in the mid-1990s, she reconnected with Enon Baptist Church and continued to give faithful, dedicated and tireless service. She completed the Enon Missionary Baptist Church School of Ministry to further aid in her spiritual growth and development and was a member of the Evangelist Echoes Choir, Women's Missionary Ministry, Petals and Pearls Ministry, Ministry Gift Support Ministry, Program Ministry and the Enon Victory Summer Camp. She was willing to serve in any area necessary for the service of the Lord. She spent several years serving in the
church office, managing phone calls and other administrative tasks. She stood firm in her belief and faith in God, and her service to God was a natural part of her life existence. She lived to serve the Lord!
Dorothy had a caretaker spirit and had always shown love, kindness, devotion and sensitivity to the needs of others. She was God-fearing, faithful, generous, compassionate and touched the lives of so many in a special way. She loved people and enjoyed being in the
company of others. Although she never had children of her own, she was such an inspiration and mother figure to so many. She was instrumental in helping to rear her Pastor's children, Shaddai, Savannah and Sterling Hayes. In addition to her love for children and people in general, she also loved caring for flowers and plants. Simply stated, Dorothy epitomized and exemplified the fruit of the spirit.
She leaves to cherish her memories a sister, Ernestine R. James of Sumter; two special cousins who were reared in the same home with her, Deloris Ramsey (James)
Stephenson and Ronald H. Ramsey; three nephews, James Henry Ramsey Jr., David De'Andre James, Karel (Ebon) James; three nieces, Lue Jean (John) Oliver, Cynthia (Jarry) McCrae, Valerie (Larry) Hayes; two special cousins, Bobby (Kim) Ramsey and Eleanor R. Goss; and a godchild, Corey Robinson.
In addition to her mother, Hattie Ramsey, she was preceded in death by her brother, James Henry Ramsey Sr.
