Emily Thigpen, a recent graduate of East Clarendon High School, was awarded the Anna Lee Barnes scholarship given each year to a young woman who plans to enter the teaching field. Emily is the daughter of James and Stacie Thigpen of Manning. An outstanding student, she developed a love for math after serving as a teacher's assistant for Ms. Karen Creech, a math teacher at East Clarendon High. Emily enjoyed tutoring and working with math students in other classrooms. She is excited about majoring in secondary math at Francis Marion University and hopes to return to her alma mater to teach that subject. Beta Alpha, the local Delta Kappa Gamma chapter, is an international society that supports professional and personal growth in women educators as well as excellence in education. The family of Mrs. Anna Lee Barnes funds this scholarship in her memory through Delta Kappa Gamma. Mrs. Barnes was an outstanding elementary school teacher who taught many local residents during her career.
