A Memorial service for Elaine Wright Porter will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 182 S. Pike Road East, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Aurelia Hill, pastor, and the Rev. Dr. James Blassingame officiating.

She was born on Oct. 25, 1951, in Jersey City, New Jersey, to the late Archibald and Tennessee McClain Wright. Elaine attended the public schools of Jersey City and graduated from Lincoln High School. A few years after graduating, she met and married Albertus "Sam" Porter. After being married for a few years, they moved to Sam's hometown of Sumter. Elaine was a member of New Hope Baptist in New Jersey, where she grew up singing with the choir. After moving to Sumter, she attended Antioch United Methodist Church. Later, she joined Canty Memorial Church of God in Christ, where she also sang with the choir. In more recent years, she joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Elaine moved to Greenville in 2020 to be closer to her daughter. Later, she began residing at Quillen Manor Independent and Assisted Living facility, where she departed from us on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021.

Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Albertus Porter; two sisters, Patsy Payne and Barbara Jean Wilson; her brother, Joseph Wright; and a niece, Tonya Wright.

Elaine leaves behind: two daughters, Towanda (Daryl) Durant of Greenville and Gwendolyn Porter of Myrtle Beach; three sons, Albertus Samuel Porter of Jonesboro, Georgia, Kevin Porter of Atlanta and Patrick (Tiffany) Porter of Sumter; a special aunt, Doris Ivey of Jersey City; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Per family request, no lieu of flowers.
