A Columbia man has been arrested after two first responders were injured by the man they were called to treat.

Sumter Police Department officers were called to Frederick Citgo, 283 S. Guignard Drive, shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report that two EMS workers had been assaulted. The two EMTs were attacked when they responded to a report of a man not feeling well and lying on the ground behind the business. The man, who assaulted the EMTs, would not comply with multiple verbal instructions from police officers and was detained after non-lethal force was used.

The 27- and 30-year-old EMTs were taken to Tuomey Regional Medical Center for treatment. One was later transported to a Columbia area hospital and is expected to recuperate.

William Terrell Hutley, 25, of Columbia, is being charged with two counts of assault and battery-first degree and public disorderly conduct.

Hutley was also treated at Tuomey for injuries suffered during the altercation with first responders. He is being held at Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center pending bond.

An investigation is continuing.
