Being considered a military town, Sumter is home to thousands of military men and women at Shaw Air Force Base who look to further their education beyond high school.

With that in mind, Central Carolina Technical College has been designated as a silver level Military Friendly School for the ninth consecutive year, providing an education with a flexible schedule for active duty military and their family members.

The Military Friendly School designation is awarded to the top colleges, universities, community colleges and trade schools in the country that are embracing military students and dedicating resources to ensure their success both in the classroom and after graduation.

For 10 years, the Military Friendly Schools list set the standard for higher education institutions to provide the best opportunities for veterans and their spouses.

Institutions earning the Military Friendly School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a survey completed by the school. More than 1,000 schools participated in this year's survey, and 625 schools earned the designation from every state in the country, one school being CCTC.

CCTC currently serves about 400 active-duty military members, dependents and veterans. The classes are offered in a variety of formats, allowing greater academic flexibility for unpredictable military schedules.

Other CCTC resources include an admissions specialist at the Shaw AFB Education Center, a Veterans Affairs representative on the main campus, a Veterans Resource Center, an active chapter of the Student Veterans of America on campus and the Veterans Upward Bound program.

CCTC also has financial aid resources available to military students. The college also offers affordable in-state tuition for active-duty military and their family members, and they are eligible for a variety of grants and scholarships as the college participates in the Tuition Assistance program for active-duty members and the MyCAA program for military spouses.

"We provide many services for our active military and dependent students in effort to ease access to the college and to make the transition from military life to civilian life for veterans," said CCTC Vice President of Student Affairs Lisa Bracken. "These services, in addition to many others, are why we have been recognized as a Military Friendly School for the ninth consecutive year. We are so very proud to serve our military population."
