A former Sumter Police Department officer was arrested by State Law Enforcement Division agents on Monday in connection with a 2018 illicit incident with a woman, according to state officials.

Travis Haynes, 43, is charged with misconduct in office for allegedly engaging in consensual oral and sexual intercourse with a woman at her residence in the county while in official capacity of the police department on June 8, 2018. He was employed as a sergeant at the time of the incident.

Haynes gave a statement to SLED admitting to the acts and there are witnesses willing to testify to the same, according to a warrant from SLED.

The SLED investigation of Haynes - who was booked at Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center - was requested by the police department.

This case will be investigated by the Third Judicial Circuit Solicitor's Office.
